End Live Animal Export for Slaughter

-

Hundreds of thousands of Australian animals are exported live and slaughtered in the Middle East during a sacrifice festival, Eid-al-Adha.

Live Export Investigation 2010 video

In a landmark animal cruelty trial, a Perth magistrate ruled that Australia's live export industry is cruel. Magistrate Catherine Crawford found the charge of transporting animals in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary harm proven beyond reasonable doubt. Yet permits for live export continue to be issued.

We ask you to uphold your word to protect animals from cruelty and END LIVE EXPORTS.

Blog Post: Sheep Fight for Life Aboard Ship

-

For the past week, 67,000 sheep have struggled to survive inside a crowded, filthy multitier ship in Australia. We're betting that not all of them have made it. The sheep―either discarded by the wool industry or bred for meat―were bound for slaughter in the Middle East, a grueling journey, but when the ship experienced mechanical problems, the captain turned the ship around and returned to Australia.

Now the ship is sitting at  the dock, and the sheep have been left on board to suffer in cramped quarters, mired in their own waste. Eventually, one supposes, it will be back out to sea again for these unfortunate animals.

The Linchpin to Middle East Transformation

-

Over the last few months, the world stood mesmerized as the power of people seeking freedom and democracy overcame the enormous challenges of long-time dictators supported by long-entrenched security forces to bring down autocratic rule.  Of course since the successes in Egypt and Tunisia, things have turned a good deal bloodier in Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, and Syria.   I do not wish to minimize the successes or the blood being lost in the fight for democracy, but the linchpin to true transformation of the Middle East is Saudi Arabia.

It Could Be a Lot Worse: A Retrospective on the Bush Presidency from a Progressive Christian Perspective

-

For as bad as we think things may be today with a stripped down health care reform ready to become law, a stalled effort on tackling climate change and the lack of true reform in our financial system, it was just a year ago that we were saying goodbye to one of the worst Presidents in American history, George W. Bush.    I have put together a number of postings from crossleft.org that I wrote throughout his second term.  Enjoy.
