Blog Post: Alec Baldwin to USDA: Seize the Elephants

-

"As a lifelong Democrat, I never thought I'd lead an effort to defend the symbol of the Republican Party," writes Alec Baldwin in a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. Baldwin is sending Vilsack the video he hosted for PETA exposing Ringling Bros.' abuse of animals and asking the USDA to take action.

Health Reform is STILL a Big Deal!

-

Health care is a right of the 99%. The Affordable Care Act has benefitted millions of people: increasing the accountability of life-saving preventative care, helping seniors save billions on prescription drugs and allowing more small businesses to extend insurance to their employees.

Yet GOP candidates like Mitt Romney continue to speak against Obama's Affordable Care Act and spread falsehoods about how it affects Americans.

Romney is the 1% and an "etch a sketch" candidate who speaks against "Obamacare" even though as governor of Massachusetts, he spearheaded the plan Obamacare is modeled on! We can't let his hypocrisy -- along with the rest of the candidates' lies about Obamacare -- permeate the media undisputed.

Don't let Big Insurance and the GOP candidates defeat everyday people like us. Make sure the candidates know health reform is still a big deal, and call them out on their lies!

Speaker John Boehner: stop the attacks on #women & #birthcontrol. #DropThePledge

He has yet to respond. Sign and Tweet this petition to tell Speaker Boehner to drop the pledge.

Tell Rick Santorum: Single Mothers Aren't "Breeding More Criminals"

-

During his 1994 campaign for a seat on the Pennsylvania Senate, current Republican GOP hopeful Rick Santorum dared to blame single mothers for the downfall of American society and accused an entire community of "simply breeding more criminals."

"Most people agree a continuation of the current [welfare] system will be the ruination of this country. We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it's falling apart because of single moms," he said at a town hall in Clairton, Pennsylvania.

These atrocious and misogynistic allegations were a foundation in Santorum's 1996 welfare reform legislation that denied women benefits if they could not identify their child's father.

"What we have is moms raising children in single-parent households simply breeding more criminals," Santorum said.

Tell Santorum: Apologize and address ludicrous comments made about single mothers!

Rob McKenna: stand by his promises & condemn the GOP attack on education!

-

Last Friday, Senate Republicans in Olympia snuck a budget through at the 11th hour that does exactly what they’ve been swearing up and down they would never do: They slashed education! And because of their antics, now the Legislature is heading toward a possible special session.

Sign the public call for Republican Rob McKenna to stand by his campaign promises and condemn the GOP attack on education funding!

Stop the "Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act"!

-

Currently, 78 cosponsors have signed on to a bill written by Representative Trent Franks that would supposedly address abortion based on racial discrimination. But a GOP memo concerning the bill claims that "abortions are the leading cause of deaths for blacks."

The memo claims that the bill, ironically named the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), addresses black abortions as different from others.

PRENDA is a clear attempt to restrict reproductive care for women of color. It's impossible to prove whether an abortion was based on race or sex, and PRENDA would allow a woman's family to sue abortion providers if they think the abortion was based on these factors--or are against abortion in the first place. PRENDA would also legally allow a woman's husband or parents to stop her from having an abortion.

Tell Franks to drop PRENDA and not put up more barriers for reproductive rights!
