The number of children fed by Feeding America food banks has increased 50 percent since 2006 to nearly 14 million children each year!

Even worse, four out of five of these children are under five years old. In this land of plenty, this is just not acceptable.

President Obama has pledged to end child hunger by 2015. To make that happen, our legislators must increase funding for important Child Nutrition Programs. Take action: ask Congress to increase funding for emergency food assistance today.

Payday loans is a short term loan promoted by its patrons as a top-up loan between paydays. These loans, however, have become an excuse to rob poor people of whatever money they have. For a start, just consider the interest rates: 2500% APR. To top that, these loans do not stop at being just a single, one time expensive form of borrowing. Most people are deliberately made to fall in a debt trap because of unclear terms, almost unregulated penalties and what not. Here are some comments from various consumers of payday loans on an online payday loans forum :

"Took money out of my account without asking (illegal). Rude on the phone, the manager was worse!!"

"I got a loan from these ppl last month. A few days b4 my payment was due I received an unexpected leccy bill which i had to pay 4 obvious reasons.
I emailed **** 2 explain my situation and told them i would pay the full amount plus any extra costs i would incur the following week. This amounted to 180 pounds.

For those of us not in the direct path of Katrina, the images of human desperation and tragic death have penetrated our hearts with deep sorrow and shock. We can barely comprehend the devastation and loss of each precious life. It is times like these that so many of us look to God for comfort and the courage to persevere.

So many people of goodwill around the world have sprung into action to donate their limited resources. Christianity at this point is best expressed in that financial support to relief and rebuilding efforts.

The time for a critical analysis of the failed response and the classism and racism inherent in the calamities of the New Orleans and the Gulf Coast must be in the agenda now. Progressive Christians will have a unique and important role to bring to that discussion and we intend to be active.
