PARDON Abused Mother Marissa Alexander for Standing Her Ground

-
The Stand Your Ground Defense failed domestic abuse victim Marissa Alexander - who didn‘t shoot anyone. Since urgent pleas for a new trial fell on deaf ears, it's time for the Governor to pardon this innocent mother.
Only after enduring a year of violence from her husband Rico Gray, who has a documented history of abuse, did she arm herself for protection.
The next threat came just nine days after giving birth to their daughter. Gray, in a rage, cornered her and threatened to kill her. But instead of shooting him, she aimed upward. The only thing she hit was the ceiling.
Gray ran into the street, claiming she threatened to kill him and his boys. Marissa, on his word alone, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
For protecting her life and children she was just sentenced to twenty years in prison, even though Gray has recanted. There's no excuse for Florida to deny this responsible mother her freedom.
Tell Governor Scott to PARDON Marissa NOW!

Tell the VA: No More Drug-Induced Veteran Deaths!

-

Hundreds of young military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are going to sleep and never waking up.

Why? Because their doctors are prescribing them the drug Seroquel for insomnia--and it may be causing them to die of Sudden Cardiac Death.

Manufactured by Astra Zeneca, Seroquel was first introduced in 1997 to treat Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia, not PTSD. Since that time, Astra Zeneca has been found guilty of marketing the drug for conditions not approved of by the FDA.

To make matters worse, Seroquel should not be given to patients who are taking anti-depressants as this increases the risk of its side effects--side effects that include death. With anti-depressants being the first line of defense in treating PTSD, this puts our troops at an even higher risk of drug interaction complications.

Please sign this petition telling the House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs to thoroughly investigate the use of Seroquel for our nation's military.

Blog Post: Victory! Cat Abuser Convicted

-

A measure of justice has been served in South Carolina, where, following PETA's undercover investigation, the woman who fatally neglected cats at the now-thankfully defunct Sacred Vision Animal Sanctuary (SVAS) outside Myrtle Beach was convicted of violating a county animal-care ordinance this morning before Magistrate Marge Bellamy Livingston. Elizabeth Owen, who didn't even bother to show up but instead submitted her plea in writing, was fined $500 and sentenced to 30 days in jail, but both were suspended.

Alabama: Allow DNA Testing That Could Save Thomas Arthur's Life

-

Thomas Arthur has been on death row, accused of murder, for over 25 years. He says he didn't do it. His daughter says he didn't do it. And DNA tests could prove he didn't do it.

But the State of Alabama won't allow it. Instead, it plans to execute Arthur in just a few weeks.

With a judge and former prosecutor now facing conviction in Texas for interfering with evidence and DNA testing that later proved Michael Morton's innocence, it's unforgivable that Alabama would even consider doing the same.

Furthermore, since Arthur's conviction, another man has confessed to the crime, and other irregularities in the case have surfaced, according to the Innocence Project.

Both the prosecution and defense agree they have evidence worn by the perpetrator of the crime, and Arthur's lawyers want that evidence retested with advanced DNA technology.

The defense has offered to pay for the testing, and Alabama should allow it.

Tell Governor Bentley to allow the DNA testing that could save Arthur's life.

Blog Post: Pepper's Story: Justice for a Forgotten Victim

-

PETA and other Virginia animal shelters have just submitted to the state the numbers of animals they received, found wonderful homes for, reunited with guardians, had to euthanize, or were able to release back into nature in 2011. Because numbers can't begin to tell each animal's story, let me describe one of those animals: Pepper.

PETA's emergency fieldworkers are on call 24/7 and leap into action even when that means getting up in the middle of the night to drive long distances in response to calls about suffering, abandoned, neglected, and abused animals. Since we refer healthy, highly adoptable animals to traditional, well-trafficked animal shelters, the animals we focus on with our hands-on work are the most abused, neglected, and underserved, usually the "unadoptables."
