Saudi Arabia, Don't Ban LGBT Students from Schools!

-

Saudi Arabia has ordered its Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice to ban students that are gay or "tom boys" from schools and universities.

The students will only be allowed to come back if they have proof that they have been "corrected" or stopped their "behavior".

Their reasoning is that this will help to stop homosexuality in Saudi Arabia, where it's a capital offense.

No one should be denied an education because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. These students cannot change who they are, nor should they have to. This is discrimination and this is wrong.

Please tell the Saudi Arabian government to not ban gay and "tom boy" students from schools!

Online Community Organizing Take 1: Interview With Claire Sale

-

This is the first blog post in the February Net2 series on online community organizing. We are kicking off with an interview featuring NetSquared Community Curator Claire Sale. Before embarking on her journey with NetSquared and moving out of the US, Claire worked for the American Red Cross as a social media specialist. Recently, after living in the UK for while, she moved to Saudi Arabia, where she is exploring an expat life.

Many of you know Claire, but she talks little about herself. I hope this interview will shine a light on the great job she has been doing for NetSquared, as well as introduce you to her full “online community organizing” experience. Read Claire’s blog to find out even more about both her adventures, and her passion for tech & social change. Also: if you have any more questions to Claire -- give her a shout via Twitter @clairesale or feel free to leave a comment here.

Death Calls for Saudi Poet and Blogger.

-

A young saudi writer, Hamza Kashgari, has fled the country for fear for his safety after receiving many death threats through the social media (twitter, youtube, facebook...etc.) Hamza is now detained by the Malaysian government after the King of Saudi Arabia requested his extradition to Saudi. We beg of you to help us with all you can to prevent his extradition to Saudi, as this may threaten his life.

The story started on Saturday (04-02-2011), when Hamza wrote three tweets on the event of the Prophet Mohammed Birthday (considered a religious day, albeit one frowned upon by the Wahhabi establishment).

Reactions:

Anger quickly exploded on twitter with people claiming how offensive these tweets were to the prophet (insulting the prophet is crime punishable by death in islamic law) Within the same day Hamza had deleted the tweets and apologized if his tweets offended anyone, and expressed that he only meant good. The next day, with death threats mounting, Hamza issued a letter of full repentance, renouncing all his former beliefs that he was accused for.

Stop Saudi Arabian Executions of Helpless Somalis

-

On the morning of 4 April 2005, six young Somali nationals were taken from their prison cells in Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia, and beheaded in public.

Announcing the executions, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Interior stated that the six had been convicted of robberies, and that theirexecutions were ordered in October 2004.

The news of the executions shocked the men's relatives in Somalia and Europe. The relatives were under the impression that the six men, who were arrested in 1999, had been sentenced to five-year prison terms and flogging. The relatives had failed to obtain official confirmation of the sentences, and became increasingly anxious when the expected release date had come and gone and there was still no sign of the men. They approached Amnesty International in 2004 but no further information could be obtained until the announcement of the executions.

Keep Clean Air Standards on Track!

-

The Obama administration's recently proposed fuel efficiency and global warming emissions standards for vehicles sold between 2017 and 2025 would go a long way to ending our dangerous dependence on foreign oil and combating climate change. They would save consumers billions of dollars at the gas pump, prevent millions of tons of global warming emissions and save as much oil in 2030 as we currently import from Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Automakers have the technology to make all new cars, trucks and SUVs cleaner. But just as opportunity knocks, they are working behind the scenes to weaken the standards with loopholes that could increase pollution and oil dependence.

The EPA and the Department of Transportation are currently accepting public comments on the proposed standards, and they need to hear from citizens like you, not just industry lobbyists.

Tell the Obama administration to move forward with strong clean car standards and oppose harmful industry-backed loopholes.

The Linchpin to Middle East Transformation

-

Over the last few months, the world stood mesmerized as the power of people seeking freedom and democracy overcame the enormous challenges of long-time dictators supported by long-entrenched security forces to bring down autocratic rule.  Of course since the successes in Egypt and Tunisia, things have turned a good deal bloodier in Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, and Syria.   I do not wish to minimize the successes or the blood being lost in the fight for democracy, but the linchpin to true transformation of the Middle East is Saudi Arabia.
