Poland, Don't Kill Bison If It's Not Necessary!

-
Polish authorities will likely approve the killing of a herd of 25 rare European bison infected with tuberculosis. But is this necessary?

A spokesperson for a group of 18 experts who met in Krosno to decide the herd's fate, told Associated Press it was a painful decision to which there’s no alternative if other herds are to be protected.

However, news reports don't say whether these experts considered the success of at least one herd of infected bison living in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park. Located in the Northwest Territory, the park includes a Bison Control Area to prevent the spread of disease to uninfected herds elsewhere.

Although numbers at Wood Buffalo declined from 1971 to 1999, in 2002 the herd’s size doubled. So far, says Canada’s Environment and Natural Resources, there’s no explanation for the increase.

Tell Poland at least look into this situation and exhaust all alternatives (including vaccinating other herds) before killing these rare bison!

Stop the Coast Guard's Butchering of Live Goats

-
PETA says over 10,000 goats are mutilated and killed every year as part of the US Coast Guard’s medical trauma training.

Hours after the activist group released a whistleblower video, graphically documenting goats' legs being chopped off with tree trimmers, the Coast Guard responded via Associated Press defending the practice, saying the trauma training was invaluable for combat and non-combat situations.

AP says several branches of the military use these methods on goats and pigs to train medics for battlefield casualties, even though some medical professionals say this cruelty is completely unnecessary because human simulation models work just as well. Furthermore, says PETA, the practice violates DOD policy, as well as the Animal Welfare Act.

Though Bob Filner (D-CA) has introduced legislation to phase out this practice, AP says he's faced fierce opposition” from the DOD.

Help show DOD what fierce opposition really looks like. Tell them to end this barbaric butchering at once.

Blog Post: Mepkin Monks to Shut Down Egg Factory Farm

Update: Great news! The monks at Mepkin Abbey now have a thriving mushroom business. After PETA's protests, boycotts, and complaints to government agencies, the monks re-examined their egg farm and discovered that they can get all their needs met without harming animals.

Quite a few longtime PETA friends and faves were among the celebs who told the Associated Press about their animal-oriented New Year's resolutions, including Bob Barker ("To continue urging folks to have their pets spayed and neutered—including rabbits."), Lea Michele ("I wish that [my cat] Sheila would stop going into my bathroom, taking out all my cotton balls out of the jars and spreading them all over."), and Katherine Heigl (whose dogs want her "to feed them consistently on time in the morning"), not to m
